Worship 'In Spirit & In Truth'

The greatest privilege and the perpetual calling for every human being is to worship our Creator God. True worship must be reverent and exalt God to His rightful place in our lives, as sovereign and supreme. It must be regulated by scripture alone, God’s revealed truth, and not man’s wisdom. Then, it will be aided by the power and help of the Holy Spirit. Satan knows that, if he can make our worship man-centred, he has successfully corrupted it. Believers will then be exposed to many dangers. Worship must start in the mind, and engage the heart, then gathered worship will be a delightful priority for every believer, greatly enriched by vibrant private and family devotions.

At the 8th Jude Conference, we will seek to establish the Biblical foundation and timeless principles for God-honouring worship and then apply them practically. Once understood, such worship of the living God will have a primary role in shaping our devotion to Christ, service for Christ, and witness of Christ. It will also mould our home life for good and aid us in child-training and sanctification.

Sessions

1. The Formative Power of Worship

Pastor Darren Cadapen will introduce the main topic of worship in the first session. The primary activity of every believer is to worship the living God. In the Divine design, worship has a pivotal role in shaping our lives. It is formative in our sanctification, Christian service, witness for Christ, homelife and a tremendous aid in child-training. Like marriage, the family and God’s Word, Satan hates God-honouring worship. If he can corrupt it, then he will, leaving the believer and church exposed to many great dangers. God-honouring worship is an intelligent activity which uses words, led by the mind, with the heart to follow. Physical senses do not lead true worship. Our emotions must flow from truth.

2. The Development of Biblical Worship

Pastor Oliver Wyncoll will speak on 'The Development of Biblical Worship'. From early patriarchal worship to tabernacle, temple and then synagogue worship, God’s Word establishes unchanging principles to follow. Throughout Bible history, there were many attempts by Satan to corrupt these timeless principles. Synagogue worship was introduced by Divine direction, practiced by Christ Himself, but in the early church was polluted by Rome. Protestant worship built on Biblical principles, remained largely unchanged for centuries, until changes ushered in by the “revivalists” and more recently the charismatic movement.

3. Worship Starts At Home

Many young believers have never experienced family worship at home. How should we draw near to God individually and as families, with the demanding, hectic and erratic schedules which can be part of our daily lives? In this practical session, Dr Tim Ramsbottom will seek to provide practical advice on what to aim for and how to approach and maintain this vital aspect of the Christian life.

4. Contemporary Idolatry: The Elephant In The Room

In this session, Pastor Jonathan Northern will delve deeper into how worship that is man-centred and based on a rehearsed performance is a contemporary form of idolatry. It’s method deliberately aims to appeal to our physical senses, decreasing the role of the mind. The Bible teaches us to separate from all idolatry and not to syncretise with it.

5. The Psalms: An Inspired Manual of Praise

The last session, given by Pastor Richard Clarke, will focus on the Psalms. God has given us a manual for praise, establishing the protocols and principles of worship song. Doctrinally rich and balanced, experientially deep and varied with objective praise, confession of sin and the need for deep humility. Progressive and stimulating in thought, it centres our thinking on Christ. Historic, doctrinally rich, Christ centred hymns follow these protocols, whereas much of modern worship has dumbed-down and diluted the praise of God.

David Kay has been the Pastor of Whiddon Valley Evangelical Church, Barnstaple, since 1993. He previously worked as an RAF Scripture Reader for SASRA and has worked in the NHS as a Mental Health Nurse and Lecturer.

Pastor Buss has been the Pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Ashford since 2021, having previously served in HM Armed Forces. He is one of the organising committee members for the Jude Conference.

East Dulwich Tabernacle - London

Pastor Cadapen has been the Pastor of East Dulwich Tabernacle, South London, since 2015. He previously worked for the Trinitarian Bible Society on the editorial team. He has spoken at Jude several times and is one of the organising committee members for the Jude Conference.

Pastor Jonathan Northern

Baldock Baptist Church - Baldock

Pastor Northern is the founding Pastor of Baldock Baptist Church, Hertfordshire, and has pastored there since it was formed in 2003. He is also a farmer and one of the organising committee members for the Jude Conference.

Pastor Oliver Wyncoll

Providence Baptist Chapel - Bedford

Pastor Wyncoll has been the Pastor of Providence Baptist Chapel Bedford since 2020, having previously had a career in business and finance. He is one of the organising committee members for the Jude Conference.

Jireh Particular Baptist Chapel - Attleborough

Dr Ramsbottom has been the Pastor of Jireh Particular Baptist Chapel, Attleborough since January 2025. Prior to this, he worked as a GP in Bedfordshire.

Pastor Richard Clarke

Beacon Park Baptist Church - Plymouth

Pastor Clarke has been the Pastor of Beacon Park Baptist Church, Plymouth since it was constituted in May 1995. He is also the Treasurer of the Trinitarian Bible Society.
